Smoking Self Help
This site is designed to help you on the road to quitting smoking. Hopefully, this is a decision you’ve thought about and you are prepared for some of the challenges that come with making such a big change. Before you go any further, think about why you’re trying to quit and make sure that you’re doing it for the right reasons. You will have much better chances of success if you’ve decided to quit for yourself instead of quitting because someone else told you to.
It’s important to know that like most life changes, quitting is a process and you’ll likely go through all of the stages of the change process. These include:
- Pre-contemplation: in this stage, you weren’t thinking about quitting any time soon, but maybe you were getting annoyed by others who always told you that you should quit. You probably heard from your doctor or parents how important it is for you to quit but let that information go in one ear and out the other. You likely ignored information regarding the physical effects of smoking.
- Contemplation: here, you decided that it was worth thinking about quitting. You might have had some concerns about your health and worries about the side effects of smoking. This is a very important part of the change process. This is when you decide whether or not to move on to actually making change or sticking with the way things already are. This is the time during which you need to prepare yourself for the change.
- Action: like the name suggests, this is the time when you act on your decision to quit. So during this time you start making the actual change or start preparing for the change. This is the exciting transition stage when you get to stop calling yourself a smoker and start calling yourself an ex-smoker.
- Maintenance: after you’ve stopped smoking, the change isn’t actually over; you need to work to maintain the change and continue being an ex-smoker. You will still be dealing with cravings and urges during this stage and so it is important that you have a long term plan to be successful in your goal of quitting smoking.
